Perhaps you are mistaking "morph" with subspecies.
The red sided garter is T sirtalis parietalis.
Thus, the red sided garter IS a subspecies of the eastern garter, T sirtalis sirtalis.
The "morphs" of the red sided garter are all T sirtalis parietalis. They would be normal, albinos, anerythristic, and snow.
Since all of the "morphs" are T sirtalis parietalis, they can all be interbred without harm. The offspring of two different morphs, bred together, will probably appear to be "normals". When these "normals" are then bred back to one of the parent "morphs", a percentage of the offspring should look like the morph.
