At my place in eastern Canada, The snake I see most often are either in the fire-wood pile outside, or under bits of wood or logs lying around.
I haven't ever found any laying around on warm flat rocks, and I even laid some of them out last year, but nosnaky came

For me, under the wood and stuff is the best.
