Samwise Gamgee. He's a true and loyal friend, he's resourceful and the voice of reason throughout the story and he gets very little credit for it. And he gets his girl, too.
His contributions to the quest were greater than anybody else's, really. He looked after his mule Frodo and even carried him up Mount Doom.
