Re: Off Season Mating Attempts??

my vet says that some species of garters have second mating seasons in late summer
I forgot about the details
but I'm not sure when they end up having the babies

Re: Off Season Mating Attempts??

if she is gravid, would brumation cause a problem? i have a pair of flames that have been doing this once a month or so for over a year but never got gravid.

Re: Off Season Mating Attempts??

she might not become gravid from his attempts...generally (not always) they have to brumate before being able to get prego.....some garters (I have read) will breed in the fall, but not sure if they will become gravid from that breeding or the spring breeding when they emerge from brumation.

Re: Off Season Mating Attempts??

Brumation is my concern, Not only for health reasons, also because I want my female to become gravid next year along with brumating all my temperate species saves me bundles of money on heating, lighting, feeding and just time in general.

Of course the females of some species/sub-species will store the sperm over the winter and then self fertilize in the spring, after brumation. I don't know if this is true of concinnus though.
