How Fat??

Im just wondering how fat garter snakes get when they are pregnant. I thought that one of mine was pregnant. Shes been eating like theres no tommorow and it was supposed to be this month when the babies were due, but she doesnt look very fat??

It can vary so much, Joe. Some get massive, other surprise their owners by giving birth when it wasn't even suspected that they were gravid. Patience and time.

Generally, when there's an extra bit of pudge down nearer the vent and lower than the middle of the body, they're gravid. Keep in mind their food intake too; best to make assumptions after the snake has emptied its bowls.

Mine just had 11 babies, and I was pretty convinced at the time that she wasn't gravid.
Of course, now that she's given birth, she does look kind of puny!! I just thought she was a bigger, older female than the one I already had. Now she's a fair-bit-smaller-probably- about-the-same-age female as the one I already had.

Its interesting to think that it varys. Perhaps she simply isnt having to many babies. What is the minimum amount of babies that a female giving birth for the first time will have??

My first garter only had one.

Don't know if it was her first litter or not though.

some can get real fat...radix...where others, wanderings don't get very big at all....
