Identify please

I found this little guy last weekend and the only reason I decided to keep him is I think he's too small to survive the winter. He's smaller than a pencil. Only thing is I haven't found one that looked like this before. Mostly brown and a black head. What suggestion would you make?? Thanks.

Re: Identify please

I saw one just like this on a bike trail a week or so ago. Unfortunatelly the little guy was flattened. We were able to move his poor flat little body to the long grass so no one else would run him over.

These snakes are smaller than Garters. He's quite capable of surviving the winter, he doesn't need rescuing!
