college

What did/are you going to do with your snakes when you go to college???? This has come up many times with me and my parents….. and I just don’t know what to do….. I don’t think that they’ll ever allow snakes in a dorm room….. and if I go to college away from home……. I wouldn’t know what to do with them…. and there is no way my parents will take care of them….. and I just can’t give them up…..

Re: college

You could have someone you trust watch them for you

That will be about the only option if you wish to keep them.

Re: college

I got mine while at uni, and in halls you're not allowed to keep pets...so I got a £25 fine when they found him, which is really mild (they need the money you're giving them, after all, so youw on't get kicked out), but I had to relocate my snake to a friend's house - a second-year who could keep him for me. I'd head over every few days to say hello, and feed him once a week. It wasn't ideal, but...it was better than nothing.

I'd say if you're going to college away from home, either leave your reps with your parents, or maybe try and board them somewhere - or get your own place when you go, but that's hardly ideal as living in halls is one of the best things about going away.

Re: college

College is a long time- 4 years plus for most. I would say, as hard as it would be, to think about rehoming them, hopefully to someone you know. College is a long, life changing experience, and you dont know whats all going to happen. You may end up living in another state and married by time your done. Its also a very busy time- studying, partying, dating, and all that. If you rehome them to someone you know, even if its just someone on the forum, then you can still "keep in touch" with them a bit.
Tell you the truth, if someone asked me to watch a snake for them for 4 years, I would consider that taking ownership.

When I went to tech school for 6 months, I gave up my gopher snakes, which is all I had then. When I got back, I didnt get back into herps for a couple years due t the business of getting into a new career and all that.

There will be other snakes needing good homes then too, you know.

I took mine with me. I've got three with me right now, one is at my parents' house but I'm bringing it here next weekend. Then again, this isn't really a dorm room, it's a proper apartment on-campus. An apartment where you can't technically keep pets, but I managed to negotiate my way around that problem. This is my third year, so it obviously hasn't been that difficult.

I have no idea what kind of system you have over there as far as living arrangements are concerned, so I doubt I could contribute with anything useful. Living off-campus is one alternative.

Re: college

Yeah, Shanley- if they will allow them where you go, you could definitely take maybe 2 or 3, that would be neat, but I wouldnt try to take care of any more than that while going to school.

Re: college

My parents have agreed to watch the "easier to feed" members of my collection, including my corns, and all my roaches, leos, beardies, etc.
However, I'm taking Fatty the eastern with me for sure. lol

Re: college

Ask them if they allow 'fish tanks'

Often they will say yes, thinking no big dog, simple fish.... but you didn't say what you were going to keep in the fish tank!!

I think it would be a mistake to suggest that you'd be keeping fish, because then they'd be worrying about water damage. They seem to worry most about damage to the apartment and water damage is worse than barking dogs, smelly rodents or cat hairs. Allergens are easier and cheaper to deal with than 20 gallons of water.

I'd ask them if they allow terrariums.
