Re: The Nature Photography Thread

Lovely photo. In the UK we call this a "Katydid". Grasshoppers are different here (I don't have a picture).

Re: The Nature Photography Thread

Perhaps "Katydid" is only a UK name. Like we call Natrix natrix helvetica a Grass Snake, while you call it a Ringed Snake. Different countries, different names!

Re: The Nature Photography Thread

On this side of the pond, we have different types of grasshoppers, crickets, and katydids... and the katydids are so named because their song sounds like they are saying, "katydid, katydid" or "katy-she-did, katy-she-did-she-did"!

Tree Cricket Pictures and Songs

common true katydid (Pterophylla camellifolia)

Both of the above links include some photos and wav recordings of grasshopper and katydid songs. Enjoy!

Re: The Nature Photography Thread

In the UK we call several things "Daddy-Longlegs"........Pholcus, Harvestmen, and Crane-Flies. Another reason why I prefer scientific names.
