Re: Northern water snake pictures

Always nice to see snakes in the wild.
Are there a lot of them where you took the pictures?
And how do react people when they see them?

Re: Northern water snake pictures

Hey nice pics of Nerodia sipedon sipedon, where were they taken at? I think in another post you had put you were in PA, as I am, that's why I ask. Me and Northerns have a rather dubious history.....they were the first snake I was ever bitten by (when I was 5yrs. old)....they can be so nasty at times, especially the little ones....LOL.

Re: Northern water snake pictures

This is my favorite picture i have ever taken so far.

The big ones were at Jacubsburg state park---my favorite place to herp, besides the ap. mountains.
The small one i found at a creek not a five min walk from my house.

Thamnophis-yeah there are a lot of northerns at jacubsburg....and most people think all nerodia are venomous and are turned off.

I get a lot of ARE YOU CRAZY's and and lot of HAVE YOU EVER BEEN BITTEN's?
Northerns hurt, they have big teeth and their saliva a has this chem. (not sure on the name of it yet) that prevents blood clotting.

Thanks

Yeh, I'm going to be helping a researcher this summer with a study on Northern waters, Eastern garters and Queen snakes, so I guess I'll get to relive my youth again and again and again.......

Cool Re: Northern water snake pictures

So the raction on snakes in the wild is everywhere the same.

The somewhat venemous saliva is made by the Duvernoy's gland. This is also present in Thamnophis.

"colubrid" venom research
