As Don already said, there's a lot of variation in the colours and patterning, it could actually be a different species. Equally, some of the southern European species vary considerably depending where they come from.

0.2.0 - T. marcianus (Binky, Esk), 1.1.0 - T. e. cuitzeoensis (Vlad, Lacrimosa), 1.1.0 - T. cyrtopsis (Vimes, Sybil), 0.1.0 - T. s. parietalis (Nobby), 1.1.0 T. radix (Lipwig, Adora Belle)
There's a lot of variation within populations. Within 0.5 ha I've seen everything from light grey to jet black, dark brown and olive green with the colour of the collar varying from white to various shades of yellow, orange and nearly red. I've seen a couple of Natrix natrix with double collars. As for the general pattern, that's varied from no pattern at all, to tiny black spots, large black spots, nearly checkered patterns and thin vertical stripes that were white on the darker brown individuals and black on the lighter grey ones. All within one population.
