Re: lord of the rings

It does establish a lot of things, relationships for one, but it also introduces the ring itself, which doesn't have any of the sinister qualities it does have in the LotR series. It pretty much lacks the mythology altogether.

Re: lord of the rings

As I recall (I read the HOBBIT in 1969), it did not start out as a book, but as a series of letters by Tolkien to his son in the British Army during World War II. A true time of good vs. evil.

Re: lord of the rings

Okay. If you were a character from Lord of the Rings, who would you be and why?

Re: lord of the rings

Tolkien is actually considered the father of what we know of fantasy worlds that have been used in many stories and games. LotR is a story primarily of good vs. evil, but it's not as simple as that. There are lessons of compassion, responsibilty, honor, love, friendship, ect. throughout the story. A lot of people have compared it to the story of the Bible, events during WWII, ect. I've read all the books including the LotR trilogy, the Hobbit, the Simerilian and also play a RPG that is based off of the Tolkien universe for more then 15yrs. now. A real basic description of LotR would be an epic story of Good triumphing over Evil and the passing on of the world to a new era. Oh and to answer James's Q....it'd have to be Legolas....he totally kicks a** and hey, he's an Elf so he's all but immortal....works for me.

I've read them all. I must admit I found The Silmarillion rather hard going....Almost dull. There is a collection of stories, compiled by Christopher Tolkien...'Unfinished Tales', that's pretty good.

Re: lord of the rings

Samwise Gamgee. He's a true and loyal friend, he's resourceful and the voice of reason throughout the story and he gets very little credit for it. And he gets his girl, too. His contributions to the quest were greater than anybody else's, really. He looked after his mule Frodo and even carried him up Mount Doom.

I'll be Faramir, unrecognised and under appreciated hero........he also gets a girl (even if she can't cook!)... although my wife thinks I should be Gollum.... "What's 'taters', precious?"

Re: lord of the rings

Let's see... I'm built like Gimli (but no beard) ... I'm as old as Bilbo when Frodo meets him again at Rivendell... and I tend to do things that were not common to my gender when I was young, like Eowyn.
