It's that bulge above the eye and the amount of black in the corners, isn't it?
Babies certainly don't seem to have them. They have that innocent big-round-eyed look. No reason to be cross yet.

Not all adult garters have eyes like that though. Some of mien have those big round vacant ones like the babies

I am loving all the pictures though!

It is the 'eyebrow' that gives them the evil look.... still working on pictures here!

ok do you have any idea how paranoid that post has just made me?
ive just been staring at my snakes eyes trying to work out if they have evil eyes or happy eyes.
luckily they are still young so both garters have happy eyes.

HAHA! My two have happy eyes, however my cheapo sony cant take a good enough pic.. Or more likely I dont fully understand its macro settings.

She looks pretty angry.

In real life she's actually pretty tolerant of handling and whatnot.
