I think mixed tanks are OK, as long as you are good at sexing!

For a while, when I had about 7 females and 6 males, I kept a BIG female tank and a big male tank.. it worked out well for me.

Actually, that can depend on the wording of the law. Many new laws coming out against private herp keeping of larger reptiles states species along with "or hybrid thereof". Are s.f. hybrids illegal is U.S ? I dont know, but they can certainly word the law to make them illegal, so it would take some research to find out. My guess is that if it resembles a s.f., they will gladly prosecute.
