Re: Big Problem

Lyris, don't ever take Stefan seriously! He's our resident Eyore, ever searching for his tail.

Our own personal Scrooge, Grumpy Old Man, Devils's Advocate. If there's a dark side, he'll find it. It's hard for him to see the good in quite a lot.

But, he's our Stefan. LOL! He can only be who that he is.

Every cloud may have a silver lining, but it's still a damn cloud.

Re: Big Problem

well some of the kids were around 10 or 11 the others were 9 and below
and one kid had a pacman frog that he fed it garter snakes! out of all things garter snakes!(i hope it dies from the parasites that the snakes probably carried and even more he would sometimes freeze a whole bunch of them in there deep freezer! so now all the other kids and adults who care about the snakes have banned him ever coming near the pond or any garter snake found in the area

Re: Big Problem

It's not really something that would piss me off. What would piss me off, is that a good spot for all kinds of herps was ruined.

And that's something that has happened to me twice this year.

- A neighbour used herbicides to ruin a good frog/grass snake spot for me, now there's not a single living organism there. No live plants, no insects, no frogs. Nothing. It's a genuine environmental crime, by the way.

- My mother owns a small piece of property together with her two sisters and it's an excellent place for finding lizards, adders and grass snakes. Now they've cleared all the undergrowth and rocks from the absolutely best spot. If you saw the little adder in the Nature Photography thread, it was found there. As owners of the property, they had a right to do it, but it still pisses me off that they did.

About 95% of the pictures I've posted featuring a reptile were taken in these two places.

Re: Big Problem

I'd be upset too Stefan

Now picture this, you know I own some swamp lands, a few weeks back Dorothy runs into the house and tells me to get the keys for the truck, there is motor noise coming from the woods!

We dash back to the swamps to find this 17 year old kid in a 4 wheel drive truck, buried up to his axles in MY swamp!!!

It was not a pretty sight

Dead polliwogs, oil slick on the water, the damage his tires caused, I stood back and let Dorothy have him!

The trail way he used to get in is now barricaded to prevent any further trespassing. (Bolstering the local economy, since I had to buy the stuff to barricade the trail)

Re: Big Problem

I think destruction of habitat is what upsets me the most as well.
The area I go is very close to where they are building a huge new arena, and I have been very disappointed the last couple of visits to see how close they are coming to the water sources with the construction. They are building a road right through the middle of the place, and all the excess soil is being piled up within a hundred metres of the pond!
Who knows how many hibernaculums, and other small animal homes have been bulldozed or buried in the process.
All I know, is that the snakes are avoiding the pond now, I'm sure they've all spread out into the quieter areas. But I worry greatly that this is only the beginning.......
