sexing?

My natrix maura is now about 20 cms long, and I was wondering wether it would be 'safe' to sex him already. Would the base-of-the-tail method work already? It's probably still too youg to see whether it's bigger than others, and I haven't got another to compare it to. I'm not a fan of 'popping'; I think t would be too easy to hurt the snake.

I'm getting a new camera (olympus SP-570 UZ or sony cybershot DSC-W130?), but not quite yet, and I'm going on a holiday tomorrow so.... I'm not in a hurry, I just wondered (maybe a bit of a hurry, since I just saw an ad from someone who wants to sell a few babies, and having a couple would of course be great).

20 cm sounds like an late '07 young.
