Re: I need to know this!!!!!
you can keep 4 garters in the same cage, if they're approximately the same size, and the cage is large enough
I would separate the male, so you don't end up with offspring

They could stay together for about 2 years if they are all babies

If the cage around 40gals +, yes.
All should he the same size, and all should be the same sex.
Unless you want babies (cause they will breed) and that case they have to all be the same kind of garter,

Gallons are irrelevant. Floor area is what matters. There's no set rule for the number of snakes you can keep in one enclosure. That's just something you learn to know. You'll know if there's too many.
I can keep 4-8 snakes in a 55 gallon. Depends on the size of the snakes, and more importantly, the social dynamics and number of basking and hiding places. Some snakes just don't get along well and stress out, but another group of different snakes may get along just fine.
Right now, I have no problem keeping (fairly big babies) 3 snow radixes, two albino checkereds, an Iowa albino, and olivia, all in one 10 gallon tank. This of course, would be too little space in about a year.
From now on, I'll treat others like they treat me. Some will be glad, others should be scared

Yeah, you sort of have to go out of your way to find a 40 gal that doesn't have the standard floor space. I think that bowfront 40gals are pretty common, but they're specifically for fish and cost an arm and a leg..
