Hi, I'm New Here!
Have A Seat....
My name is Bruce; I live in South Dakota. I have an interest in all that grows, flies, creeps, and slithers on this prairie that I love.
I am an artist and painter of walls and signs, a designer of gardens, a caretaker of elderly people, a newspaper proofreader and writer of articles, and a writer of stories and poetry. I have been fortunate to have sketches in a museum and have been published in regional publications. My Minnesota brother is a far better photographer than myself, and we have both have been fortunate to have photographs published.
I live in a small town and am a member of a Lutheran church; I volunteer at all of our other churches, designing/installing holiday displays, creating summer Bible school scenery, and maintaining gardens that I designed/installed. For my own church’s Christmas tree, I create ornaments wholly from natural objects – wheat heads, corn husks, dried/pressed leaves, dried flowers, feathers, twigs, and seed pods. It is important to me to remind others that you can be the poorest person on Earth but still have the most beautiful Christmas tree, if you only look at what has been handed you in your own backyard.
At Christmas time, I retyped our city phone list, enlarged it, and gave it to the handful of people in my town who have macular degeneration. I would encourage others to think about typing and enlarging phone lists and recipes for the people they know who might be in need.
I volunteered for two years to reorganize our high school library, and then I volunteered for two years to reorganize our public library. My most favorite book is Alice Walker’s The Temple of My Familiar. My most favorite epic poem is The Song of Hiawatha.
I am an ardent fan of the music of Tori Amos, Rickie Lee Jones, and Joni Mitchell.
My own raggety-taggety English garden was one of the gardens of the year in South Dakota, and SD Public Television came to film and interview me years ago. Presently, I am most interested in bananas, cannas, and other tropicals. I have done a complete survey of the trees in my town – in hopes of saving those which are single specimens or rarely planted varieties.
I volunteered to survey breeding birds and butterflies in my county. I have been fortunate to report two new bird species and two new butterfly species for South Dakota. When I could afford it, I would tag migrating monarch butterflies and give presentations to our grade school. One butterfly that I tagged traveled 1776 miles to her wintering ground in Mexico. My degrees are in Environmental Science and English.
I have a smooth green snake named Harry who I discovered hit-and-run on the highway on which I jog. A little surgical glue and tape somehow helped him mend himself. Harry is more an object of art than a pet, and I rarely handle him. I came to this forum for Harry, because there is so very little information printed about the care of a smooth green snake.
I lost my partner Allen not so long ago, but I am not alone in my grief. Prior to that, circumstances allowed me to help my sister raise her children. I will not know what it means to have a child of my own, but I know what it feels like to see children I have cared for walk down aisles wearing gowns – graduating high school, graduating college, marrying a military man. I think it is my most proud accomplishment to have raised children who, like myself, have never ever used alcohol or drugs.
I have looked at photos on this forum and read some of the most kind and most helpful words from people who know more than I could ever aspire to know. There are so many names that I have yet to remember, but I very much would like to, if I may at some point, speak to Udo with the remarkable outdoor snake enclosure, Le Ann, Don, Steve………just to name a few. I have appreciated all of your hard and good work and your constant kindnesses. I hope that the day will come when I can celebrate your successes and help you grieve your losses.
I haven’t all that much to contribute to the forum. But I wanted to introduce myself. I am so very sorry that I haven’t written this sooner.
All-in-all, I have an ordinary life; I go about an ordinary day. I live in South Dakota. My name is Bruce. And I am not leaving.
And now I would like to collect the award for The Most Excruciatingly Lengthy Introduction…..

Re: Have A Seat....
Well you're a lot more interesting than we knew. You've been holding back on us. I don't know about anyone else, but being how I was feeling a bit guilty for my part in making you feel unwelcome, I'm am breathing a sigh of relief and I'm glad you decided to stay.
From now on, I'll treat others like they treat me. Some will be glad, others should be scared

Welcome Bruce and if you don't mind me asking; how to you go about tagging a butterfly? I have heard of it being done and even gave it a go when I was in elementary school but I think I ended up with a crippled butterfly that couldn't fly.

Bruce, a most hearty welcome! I have never tagged a Monarch but raised several hundred here in Connecticut back in the 70's to make their journey to Mexico. You have much to offer us and I can't wait to learn more! You seem to have your hands quite full and I for one would very much enjoy seeing more of Harry. He just happens to be my favorite color and I have never seen one in person (so to speak)
