I plan on purchasing a garter snake in the near future (if I can find a breeder) and want to know about the whole hibernation process. Today is October 8th, if I purchase a lets say 1-2 month old snake would I still hibernate it at such a young age? If so what month should I start it and what month should it end? Also what are the steps you take to put the snake into hibernation?

Thanks so much guy, imp new to garter snake keeping

Personally i hibernate all my snakes. It doesn't matter how old they are.
Juveniles (when healthy) can be hibernated without problems.

Maybe it is wise to wait till spring to buy a garter snake. Otherwise yoú will buy one and within a month or so you put it in a dark box to hibernate. Not much fun for you.

Best month to start is depending on where you live and what species you will buy.

I don't hibernate mine when they are babies. They do fine either way. I only hibernate when they are old enough to breed or if they go off feed. Some of my snakes that aren't old enough to breed quit eating during the fall so I hibernate them for a couple months to get them to start eating again.
