Hey guys I was just wondering if some of you could put some pics up of your enclosures. My snakes just seems so plain and bland and I want to spruce it up some, so maybe I can get some ideas from yall. :D

Stefan, what's your substrate. I like it. Looks like 'dirt.'

Lori, you crack me up!!! You've got the 'natural' down. Like the plants in the pots, et al. Nice job.

p.s.

Like the rock idea, Stefan, IN the water dish. Holds it in place from getting tipped; allows Snakey-Kid to rest on something. Like that. Will have to do/try.

Peat moss. Very cheap, low pH (makes it hard for most bacteria to survive) etc. etc.

No snake has ever tipped any of my dishes, even without the rock. Those pictures are in chronological order, so as you can see, I've done away with that system a long time ago. :) The only time I had a rock in a bowl after those first few weeks, was when I got the vagrans babies and I was concerned that they would have trouble getting out of the water dish. So I put a rock in there to make sure they would have something to push against.

Stefan - Did you build those?

Stefan-A
06-27-2008, 08:03 AM
Yes, the ones made of wood. :)

I'm considering make one or two new ones, about half the volume of the ones I'm using now. Won't need them for almost a year, though.

Very nice Stefan! I love the tree stump in the last one! Mine isn't nearly as intricate, but still natural... and yeah, Wayne, mine spends quite a bit of time up on the driftwood branch. Recent pics must still be on the camera. I'll go get it out of the car see what I've got to share :)

Stefan, you've got a wonderful display! I LOVE the two upper lamps, how they're like a pair, but opposites.

Can you get a pic of the whole thing again, stepping further back? Like what are the lights on the top? Does it go floor to ceiling? Is it in your living room?

GREAT setup!!!! Really really good!

THANK YOU (taking a bow) So now when you start snapping pictures -

For interesting photo ops, feed the snake, tun on the camera and hold the button half way down.

At the moment your subject begins to "yawn" snap away.

I found it best to set the camera on "burst" so it takes a slew of rapid pictures real fast, then pick the one with the best mouth angles.

It also works good for tongue flicks:D

Speaking of fake plants- where do you guys/gals buy most of yours, and what type seem to work best (what are they made of)?
Seems like a cheap easy way to spruce up my cages.

I get all my plastic plants at the animal shop or at a reptile show. They can be plastic, of some sort of fabric. Plastic works the easiest in my opinion.

I like the silk plants best and I do get them from a reptile supply place that has decent prices
I always keep my eyes open at craft and discount stores, but so far I haven't found anything I thought would work
I used to think the silk plants were more fragile than the plastic ones, but they seem to be holding up just fine, even through bleach and hot water rinses

Loren, I get my plants from the dollar store or the craft store. And when they get icky, I just throw them in the dishwasher.

Same as Lori -- Dollarama!!
They've held up remarkably well, even through scrubbing and boiling water soaks! I get an ivy garland that covers two climbing branches with enough left over to glue to hides, rocks etc.

Thanks Rhea, Anji and Lori. I'll have to start looking into that. This year has been a slow but steady process of getting many cages upgraded to bigger sizes, and I am also trying to make them look nicer. I have a long term goal for my reptile room all(well, mostly) mapped out in my head, and am heading towards it. Specializing in native snakes, and phasing out of many, but not all of the other animals.
I even replaced some of my bud light hide boxes with upside down black plastic bowls. :)

I am debating about bedding choices too. I have used orchid (fir tree) bark for years now, but it seems like its dustier everytime I buy it, and I am concerned about it becoming a health problem. I'm just not into carefresh. I like aspen for the most part, but like a bedding that looks natural and packs well- so it stays in place. I just dont really like the way they shread the bulk aspen that I buy around here- too big and fluffy.
Might try to get aspen chips instead of shavings. I think with nicer hides and a fake plants, it might look ok.

Well I found a cure for my own problem- I slowly poured the bedding from one container into another, outside, in front of a big fan turned on high. Blew most of the dust right out of the bark and into my eyes!

Ah, I don't have any pictures... But a certain little baby green snigglette I know now has a Selaginella apoda, Meadow Moss, in his tank.

I just left it in the pot and hid the pot (4" pot) behind the big bend in the mopani log so I can't see the pot. The moss trails over the log and is so pretty! It gives a brightness to what was only brown and adds a softer texture. It's really pretty!

That's all I've done around here.

Clive, tiger morph crested gecko:

Venom, Tokay:

Fabio, fire bellied newt (hope to get more soon,)

I don't have photos of the bp's enclosures, but for the most part they're plan. I need to get pics of the clawed frog tank, too, eventually.

Sometime after January the b/f and I are going to build Inyoka a giant enclosure (and will hopefully have another garter by then.) I already have the frame. It used to be one of those old, wooden TVs that had been turned into a shelf.
