i thought my eastern blackneck garter was gravid but all she produced were a bunch of slugs, at least that's all that was there when i left for work this morning. now here comes the stupid question: does this mean that breeding took place? i never saw it but i hoped it had hapened and then she started to get bigger...i just don't know if sloughing the eggs requires the attempt at fertilization or if it's like chickens: "you don't need a rooster to get eggs but you do need one if you want chicks"

I found a white oblong squooshy thing in the hognose tank last week. Was this what you'd call a slug? A bad egg?

well, yellow actually, but yes, that's a slug, an unfertilized egg. i just don't know if they'll produce and slough eggs based on a cycle, not unlike humans, or if this has to be the result of breeding activity.

In general it means they bred, but the eggs didn't get fertilized, however, my t e terrestris threw one 3 years after the male passed away and hadn't been hibernated or bred.

I'm sorry that she laid slugs.

I have an Eastern Blackneck girl that has laid slugs two Septembers in in row. One year I had no male in the house and the second year she was put with a male Eastern Blackneck but I never witnessed any breeding. This year I witnessed breeding and I am hoping that her appetite and size are due to her being gravid.

Good luck with your pair next year.
