Baby Dekayi snakes eating pinky parts!

Tonight just for fun I tried to feed my baby dekayi snakes bits of pinky.

First I rubbed the legs and tails all over a big gooey slug, and every single baby Dekayi ate pinky bits for me:cool:

I took many pictures, but I am on someone elses computer right now.

As soon as I am on my own PC, I will upload the pictures for all to see.

Maybe this will be just what that tiny little runt needs to start growing strong!

Stephanie, I only have 3 slugs, and I need to take really good care of them so I can use them to keep scenting rodent parts.

Tonight I am going to try and get my adult Dekayi snakes to eat rat pup thighs scented with them.

Here is a trio of the pictures I took, too many of them came out blurry.

Had I not seen this with my own eyes (now you all have too) I never would have believed it.

my sal would freek out !! he is a picky eater and now has not aten in 6 days , need slugs too!!
have lots of worms and nagini ate a whole one , she is going to shed , so she was so fat sall almost killed him self to get close to the colossal beauty.

Now here is Xena my breeder mom eating the whole thigh / leg of a rat pup cut off and scented with a slug.

Michelle, I feed mine night crawlers that I cut into chunks with scissors.

The baby snakes are trickier, I have to cut the night crawler 4 ways, first I cut off a chunk, then I split that down the middle lengthwise, and again, making a slender strip of crawler.

That's what gave me the idea, I was scenting the crawler with Slug, so I lobbed off a thigh/leg from a pinky, rubbed it on the slug, and YUM. They all took this and ate it.

wow thats so cool, might have to try this when the slugs have came back, although i do have some slug eggs in my worm bucket , they were layed by the slugs that were procreating in the container pryor to being someones lunch.
look kinda like clear fish eggs and very small pin size. still waiting if they will hatch. cool if they did ha haaahaa

Yes those are slug eggs, I have gathered the eggs from under boards before and put them in a big cool whip bowl filled with dam grass clippings and some composting leaves, they incubate quickly, and I fed the tiny baby slugs to my neonate Dekayi's for the first few weeks when they were the smallest.

I had a big chest freezer in the basement, (non working) I put a layer of damp dirt on the bottom and caught tons of slugs, put them in there, and had slugs all winter long.

I want to monitor growth with the pinky diet and see if this makes a difference.

Remember when Stefan made the comment about the Lego?

I bet if a Lego was scented correctly, a snake would try to eat it.

I have watched my garters strike at the bottom of the feeding box, because it had fish smell all over it.

Scenting is one of my favorite things ever Wayne. My California night snake finally took its first pinky the other day- scented with a side blotch lizard.
One thing I have learned is that scenting has to be done very meticulously with the real picky ones, in order to work. With less picky snakes, like many garters, a quick rub on some fish or a frog is all they need.

And I know some snakes would eat a scented lego. :)

I have manyyy snakes that would eat a scented lego... or even unscented pizza if i wiggled it right!!

hahaha, can you imagine how funny our snakes would look if they ate lego's :D

it would make for convienient storage of them :eek:

most of my garters will try with all of their might to eat the glass if some goo gets on it!

I tried a few days ago a whole pinkie, with worms. NO GO, so tonight I cut up worms, & pinkie parts, & let's see if anyone eats!!!

because I was eating chips outside and it flew right into my mouth and i had chewed it up and swallowed half before I realized it happened. When I spat and saw a grasshopper head... well....


they're crunchy.. and not at all similar to the flavor of potato chips.

A quick update, the tiny little runt that I was afraid of losing is making a fast recovery on the pinky diet.

The little snake would only eat one small slug every other day, and refused cut bits of worm.

Well on the first attempt he would only eat one pinky leg, the very next day he ate 4, then last night he ate 5 (4 legs and a tail complete with the butt still attached)

There is already a noticeable difference, mostly girth since a full belly makes them "chubby"

Looks like he will make it after all:D

The siblings all tore into the pinky parts with gusto......Again.

Update, the pinky parts are having no adverse effects, and the snakes seem to prefer them over worms now.

One even spit out a slug! But he ate 4 pinky legs and a tail!
