Hello everyone, I intend to put some Thymus serpyllum into the enclosure (in pot). Do you think it might be harmful or without problems for garters? The same question goes for Basil(Ocimum basilicum), I find these plants very nice and they smells so good. But I want to make sure there is no harm to put them into an enclosure.

Thank you

Mathieu

why risk it?
I just looked up those plants and they are very nice looking and would probably look great in a terrarium setting. I know they have a strong sent while not in an enclosure.
Anyway, what about these guys:

Here's a list of the plants I used in my terrarium.
creeping ficus
philodendron
asparagus fern
scindapsus aureus(devils ivy)
miniature palm

My thoughts exactly...

Aromatic plants release particles into the air (why we smell the scent) and could possibly cause respiratory issues.

I suspect that some of the substances that we value them for, might actually be weapons intended for chemical warfare against insects and other pests. It certainly applies to other plants we use for food.

Precisely, what we perceive as an attractive scent to us, may very well be offensive to certain other species.

Think about this one... To most dogs carrion may as well be perfume.

So if there is even an outside chance that the aromas from those plants may be offensive or downright harmful to garter snakes, why risk it?

Thymol is an essential oil that is used by some beekeepers to control parasitic mites on honeybees. It is potent stuff in its purified form. I Don't know what effect it might have on snakes. See: Thymol (http://www.thirdplanetfood.com/phyt14.htm)
