I've had prairie dogs! They are alot of fun! You should get two though! They are banned (or were) in some areas though so I'd check that out first.

this thread i think is about to merge with another i think....about pathogens not sure but did i read about these animals being associated with bubonic plague or some similar nasty disease that leaves you with a headache [well it does if your one of the few survivors]

i know there was a ban back in 2003 because of diseases, mostly because of wild caught animals being sold and transmitting disease to humans. the ban was lifted in 2008 and i checked, it is indeed legal to keep in my area. just thinking at the moment, no commitment yet, but we'll see. marnie, don't click here!

Omg...you are in so much trouble for that video! He was fat! He was cute and fat. He reminded me of a chipmunk. I will not get any prairie dogs though...I can't even deal with the animals I have right now. I can't believe how often I have to clean the dang guinea pig cage. I literally do not have time to get a job to get the money to take care of my animals because I am so busy taking care of my animals all day long! I just finished cleaning the guinea pig cage and now I have to get the tank ready for the new snake...and I just cleaned Cee Cee's tank last night...no rest for the wicked.

I didn't know people kept prairie dogs as pets either! It's adorable!! Almost certainly illegal in my province though.

haha they are adorable little things! and from what i've seen (just videos on youtube) they get along with cats and dogs too...though i'm sure it really does vary from animal to animal. cleaning cages can be a full time job! i have 20 or so snakes here at any given time and about once every three months or so, i'll go through and do a complete breakdown, scrub and replace all the bedding. it takes hours!! then there's the constant spot cleaning and watering that happens day to day... but, it's worth it!

joe, i was reading about that. small pox and monkey pox it seemed to have been. they were banned for like five years before the fda lifted it.

kimberly, i'm not familiar with the laws up in canada. you'd have to do some checking around.
