You say you currently have proper low temps at night without a heating mechanism, so I'm not sure why you'd neat to provide additional heat if the enclosure were bioactive. Regardless:
1) I...

I’m a little late to the post. I’m in the St. Louis area (Saint Peters, MO) and have no problem finding guppies at PetSmart or Petco. I wouldn’t consider them cheap though based on how often Thams...

The setup you described should work. Having the thermostat connected to the wall, the timer to your thermostat and the light to your timer should accomplish what you want. When the timer is on and...

That's tricky. Based on the picture, I would personally keep them separated until they were closer in size. And even then, you'd want to monitor based on their individual feeding response.

I agree that it looks Female from the pic. However, with regards to being sexed by an experienced breeder, they make mistakes. I’ve got 7 Garters from 4 different breeders and all four breeders...

I’d also like to add, Facebook has been cracking down on animal sales since it’s against their policy. This may be a good time for this forum to appear on a mobile app like tapatalk in order to get...

Infernalis are not known to be docile in general. But I believe concinnus are. Marcianus are known to be good too, although my male is he exception to the rule. A melanistic eastern is possible,...

I use the Tapatalk app for fauna as well as a few other forums. It’s a central location that allows me to get notifications when posts are made as well as easily post pictures. I think if this forum...

This could be diet related - I wonder what this snake is being fed?
-
It's hard to tell from the picture, but I think it would work for an adult garter. I keep adults in tanks with from sliding doors and have never had an escape. I certainly would not try it for a...

So unfortunately this one does not have a happy ending. The snake ended up dying several weeks ago. I was waiting for the results of a necropsy, which I received today. Report was inconclusive,...

He ended up shedding last night. Good shed. You can see here some of the stuff came off with the shed. Maybe it was just stuck shed? The vent still does not look completely clear but it's much...

He's looking better but still not totally cleared up. He's got a good appetite and passes waste regularly, so that's good. He's currently in shed; hopefully that will help clear it out some.
I...

I showed the pics to the vet and he no longer thinks it's stuck shed. But he recommended daily soaks and wiping with paper towels to remove material.

Zoomed Aspen Snake Bedding. I use the same stuff for my other garters and have never had an issue.

Yeah. I'll take a picture tomorrow.

Steve - I found this post from you about 10 years ago:
https://www.thamnophis.com/forum/husbandry/4616-crusty-vent.html
Do you recall if this is what your snake's vent looked like?
-
On the head side? No, it looks normal. The only swollen area is near the vent.
-
Yes, you can house two together, just be careful when feeding. They enjoy climbing and basking, so sticks and a heat lamp would be used. You should also provide hides. They also enjoy burrowing.
-
Thanks, Eddie. Any clue what it is? You think it's safe to pull whatever that is off?
-
Looking for input on what may be causing this crusty material at the vent. I had one snake that had something similar die several weeks ago, presumably to it not being able to properly defecate. ...

Good to know. They're currently similarly sized, but the vagrans has a much bigger appetite and is growing fast.
-
They're in a bedroom that sees traffic. They will come to the glass in the tank and are not afraid when we approach. They are feed with tweezers. They are currently housed together; I will be...

I have a T.S. Parietalis (unknown gender) and a T.E. Vagrans which I believe is female.
