Also, I think rosy reds are just as bad as goldfish. All the points Steve made about goldfish apply to the rosy reds as well.

That is great to hear; congrats!

I am a big believer in letting them eat as much as they want. I feed them whenever I clean their cages which is daily or every other day, depending on poop production. I also try to alternate fish,...

I will second what Albert said and ask: have you tried leaving the food in overnight? Some of my garters like to have a midnight snack.

For a June baby he does not look small to me; but that is just me.Talking temps, I tend to favour higher temps myself, close to 90 for the hot side.
-
I guess I got lucky but all my garters eventually learned how to fish. In some cases it took a couple of months but eventually they all did it. Once they started fishing it was pretty easy to throw...

My source for the above:
The effect of ambient temperature and type of wound on healing of cutaneous wounds in the common garter snake (Thamnophis...

I will second the warm temperature; garters heal better at about 30 degrees Celsius.

Did you try some fish? F/T Salmon, trout, tilapia or some live feeder guppies or mollies.

Sorry but I do not follow what you are saying. That is an experiment describing several different protocols, all of them quite different than what you stated; nevertheless, maybe you can be more...

I do not have that book, can you let us know what it says, please? Very interested in the academic literature on garters et al similar to garters.

Congrats on getting him to thrive, I know it is a challenge with babies.

He looks so cute! I am also a fan of the buffet approach to feeding, but that is mostly because mine will not take food from me directly.

Deaths from brumation (might provide an indication of the dangers of brumating):
Factors influencing the emergence of a northern population of Eastern Ribbon Snakes (Thamnophis sauritus) from...

Another interesting read is the article linked below, what I got from it was the importance of hydration during brumation.
Effects of humidity, temperature, and submergence behavior on...

Resilient little snakes when it comes to dealing with the cold (they seem able to brumate close too freezing):
"Bailey (1949) assessed survival atdifferent depths (6-24 in; 1 in. = 25.4 mm) in an...

Thanks for the reply! I do not think I am overly interested in breeding mine so I will skip the brumantion process. That said I would not say no to a couple or 100 new babies.
-
Really fantastic pictures!
-
Steve, do you bromate any of your snakes? Only those that you want to breed? I think that what works for your million plus snakes should work for me too :)
-
Awesome post, Jeremy! Looking forward to reading more -- and seeing some more great pictures.

More details, more pictures.... Please :)

The expo was ball python heavy. I only saw one kind of garter snake, albino checkered for $100 - see a picture. On the upside, the building also doubles as a FBI place. 14810148111481214813
