Rather than list them all as unknown, why not get a count of known males, and the rest list as PROBABLE females, sexed by popping?
that's basically what i did, it's not the females that are the issue but the "popped males" that turn out to be females.

I don't understand. If a snake has been popped and the hemipenis has been seen. How is that later a female? If a female is popped then there is no hemipenis to be seen. I'm just trying to understand how a popped male can be confused with a female.

I have never popped a snake. Can there be confusion as to what you are looking at? From what I've read, somethng either pops out(male) or doesn't(female) I can see the confusion if a male is not popped correctly it would be looked at as a female. The other way around doesn't seem logical.

IMHO if a male pops... Then why the heck would you believe probing over that? I have had many local non-garter people probe garters incorrectly.

sometimes when you pop a female, they have these little things that sort of stick out that can resemble hemipenes on a tiny snake, but are actually not. Possibly that is how this error occured.

    amanda,
maybe you and i can get together after the first babies are born (assuming there will be babies) and you could teach me how to pop them.

All I can say is if you have to strain to find hemipenes, then it's a probable female. The snakes I popped, well, it looked like tiny little alien antennae pop out of them. The ones I saw were grey, lending that quality even more so. However, I may not have gotten all the males to pop out of the batch of six. I think I only had one male, but I could have had 6 and not gotten the other 5 to pop.

Anyone have babies now that they are willing to pop for the camera?
