    Throwing up water?

I found a snake on my front lawn the last week and I figured I'd take him in to live with my other garter to save him from my cats, who are constantly leaving us presents at the front door (how I got my first little guy), and the weather (I live in Westchester, NY and its getting pretty damn cold).

Just a couple minutes ago I picked the new guy up to handle him a bit and almost immediately, he started throwing up clear liquid. I'm pretty sure I was watching him drink from the water dish about 5-10 minutes earlier, so I'm confident its just the water coming up as a nervous reflex. Also, I handled him for a good couple minutes the other day and had no problem. In any event, I just wanna be sure that its not some kind of illness or anything like that. Here are a couple pics, the new one is the lighter colored one

If a snake has just taken a drink and then you pick it up, the water will often gush out of their mouths. It doesn't even appear to be volutary, it just kind of comes out. I have seen it happen many times, I would say you have nothing to worry about!

Are you sure that's a garter snake? - It looks more like a brown snake (dekay) to me.

I agree with Shannon, I wouldn't worry about it.

You know, it didn't look a garter to me either. I just kind of assumed it was since they are the most common snake in my area. I'm glad to know that this isn't a serious issue. Now for my next question: do brown snakes eat fish like garters? Or are they strictly earthworm and slug eaters?

Aww, the second picture is so cute! Looks like a Dekayi to me as well. I've got one, he's super friendly and always begging to be fed. He likes worms but loves slugs, most of the time I barely get my hand in the tank and he's snatched the slug off the fork. (I scoop his prey item up with a plastic fork because I'm a girl and don't like to touch slimy bugs)

Nice looking snakes. Definitely a dekayi. Slugs and earthworms as you stated. Never heard/read of them eating fish. They can live together, also. The dekayi will stay much smaller than the garter.

not a reflex thing.....you pick up a snake and dangle him after drinking the water will run back out...
