They can hear you. Their hearing isn't very acute since they don't have an outer ear, but they do have an inner ear beneath their skull. Any sound that is intense enough to make it through the skin and into the skull bone, is heard. Don't expect them to come running when you call their name, and don't expect them to even know their name though. Unlike a dog or a cat, I don't believe that snakes desire to please their owners. It just happens by accident.
