Yay. I filled out a questionnaire yesterday and now the site that posted it sent me an e-mail telling me I'm one of the lucky 5/1000 who won something because they participated. So basically, I can buy something for my cat, my dog or my rodent at a 15% discount, because that bloody useless store doesn't sell anything related to keeping herps, which I pointed out to them several times when I answered their questions.

Garters as my intro to more wild life...

I've caught Wanderings, and even a few Plains garters off and on since fourth grade- back in '90.

As much fun as they are to observe and keep- I have been afforded another awesome opportunity to interact, and hopefully educate the masses on another type of wildlife-

    Birds of Prey.

I waas able to hook up with a small educational foundation that uses a raven and four other ambassadors to help educate the public about the effect we have on our environment, and as a result our animals.

I am nowhere near a subject matter expert- right now I am training on bird handling- there is definitely a rush when you go to get a female great horned owl out of her kennel and she clacks her beak at you- Great stuff.

The feelings are akin to seeing a garter slip through some undergrowth after a futile morning of searching.

It really is an addictive high.

Ok, that's it- I am done raving.

Nope, it's cloudy and it rains. The ash is supposed to have arrived, though.

I had enough of that crap when I was a kid. It was anywhere from 1-12 inches deep at any given time over a period of several years. I could swear I was living on the moon.

It's not going to happen, it's too far up in the atmosphere.

When it's like that, just a layer up high carried by the jetstream, it makes and interesting halo around the sun. But it's raining where you are so you can't even get that.

The ash I was referring to was from Mt. St. Helens from 1979-1986. Much of Asia and on around to even Japan got some ash fall from the big eruption but when I was a kid we got ash dang near every time. Many people don't realize it erupted before and many times after the big one. Oh, and again on March 8, 2005 it send a plume of ash 38,000 feet into the air just like the old days.

Anyway, I've had more than my lifetime's share of trudging through that crud.
