    That's funny because I've also heard them called Brazilian ground snake. One thing's apparently for certain: You can usually find them on the the ground or in water.

    I suppose that narrows it down somewhat. It sounds like they were trying to make a clear distinction that this snake is not likely to be encountered in the only two places left; up in trees or deep in caves.
