New to garters, which one to go for?

Hi, I'm in the UK and would like to start keeping garter snakes. i'd just like to know which species i should go for? do they vary a lot in temperament, size and requirements?

garters arent very popular over here but I've seen eastern and red sided in local pet shops today, i've seen checkered in the past and someone on RFUK has bred some san franciscos which are really pretty. If there are others that are recommended i could try to find them, I like different species rather than morphs.

Greetings . Temperament wise I think you'll find it's down to the individual snake/the age at which you get it/the amount of time you spend interacting with it.
I recommend checking the articles section as well as having a good browse through the site .
Keeping - 'Florida blue' sirtalis, concinnus, infernalis, parietalis, radix, marcianus and ocellatus.

Hello & welcome from Idaho! I would probably go with the San Fran garters, but that is pretty much because living in to US we can't have them. LOL
All of the garter species are good, IMHO. This site, on the left hand side lists a lot of the species, if you click on the name it will tell you a bit about them, usually including the average size they get to.

It's not a complete list, but it does have quite a few in one place, which is nice.
    Hope that helps you some!
