'Tis the season. Soon, there will be a second wave, when half the people who have caught a garter this summer, come around whining that they don't know what to do with the dozens of babies that have "unexpectedly" appeared in the enclosure. Soon after that, there will be the people whose kids have caught a baby garter and can't get it to eat crickets and mealworms.

You guys are so awsome for putting up with us " I caught a snake now what" newbies. Just think about all the snakes you are saving by giving out good information. There is a lot of bad info out there, including advice from petshops.

But you can count me out of the second wave crowd. After seeing tons of cool baby pic posted in this forum I have secretly been hoping the snake I caught turns out to be a gravid female. so you won't hear any whining from me

Yeah, I think your wave actually stretches over most of spring and summer. Although some aren't keeping it to just a wish, but actually set out to find and catch gravid females, which I personally condemn (meaning that it's not forum policy to condemn it), since it's just about the most destructive thing one could do to the local population, after lobbing a grenade into a hibernation den.

More like a firecracker when you find dozens (or more) gravid females basking on the banks of a creek. And that's just one small stretch of creek when it goes for miles. In the case of ordinoides, the gravid females found in one basking area can number in the hundreds, if not thousands. Not to mention the extremely slim odds that any offspring from any one snake will survive to breeding age.
