No, you don't need to use ceramic. Ceramic bulbs emit no light, so I'd go with a basking bulb that produces light as well as heat, just make sure your temps stay good; don't get one too high wattage.

That is a good bye. Some garters like to climb. I try to let them. I had a tank like that once but had to get rid of it as it had been badly maintained before i got it. It had my first Floridor blue in it and she liked it.
