Definitely make sure you know the sex before throwing another snake in there.

As for your original question -- If the snake is smaller but mature, like still has a strong build, the size won't matter too much. Biggest concern for me is them getting crushed under the larger snake, and larger risk during feeding accidents. If the size isn't that significant though, you shouldn't have a problem putting a smaller snake in there.

But again, make sure they're both males. Post a picture of his tail/vent and we can help you with that

Probably more uncomfortable then lonely. I think garters like company. Any chance you can post a photo of you checkered?

I have a similar question. I have a single baby that is only 7 inches long. She/he isn't eating very well and the next size snake I have is 17 inches. That snake is a slender wandering garter so it isn't a tank like my Radixes. I was thinking of putting the two of them together to keep each other company. I think both RedSidedSPR and I would love any rule of thumb you have. Thanks.
