    Re: Mites Poll

I've gotten mites from a pet store and a mail order dealer.

I've gotten redbugs on Iowa wild caught snakes a few times, but they do not count. The snake mite is native to North Africa and the Middle East. It can go through the full life cycle in one snake cage. The USA natives do not go through a full life cycle in a snake cage. They die off eventually even with no treatment.

I've never read or heard of this info.
I don't know which is which.
I do know that Ophionyssus natricis (Snake Mite) left untreated will cycle and kill the host.

    Re: Mites Poll

The one time I had mites they came from one of the following:

The snake - bought from a dubious shop from an unidentified breeder showed to have several problems. Nose rub, hookworms ... And a potential source of mites.

The other option, also more likely, was orchid bark which I bought from one of my favourite dubious reptile shops. Shortly after changing to this from aspen, the mites appeared. Only the above snake was on this bark ... And only this one got the mites.

I got some provent a mite, changed to repticarpet and started to dislike shops (the start of the loathing that has given me a reputation across Britain ...)

I hated the mites .... Hate 99.9% of reptile shops more though.
Keeping - 'Florida blue' sirtalis, concinnus, infernalis, parietalis, radix, marcianus and ocellatus.

    Re: Mites Poll

From my experiences of working in a reptile shop and keeping animals myself i have experienced mites from these sources from Reptile shows, Reptile shops and bad batches of substrate, particularly orchid bark Have also found they often develop on weaker animals.

    I selected other

I remember peeking into one of my enclosures, particularly a corn snake. I saw a bunch of tiny insects or whatever they were all on the inside of the water dish at the water line and no where else in the tank. I just picked up the dish and threw it into boiling water and gave the tank a good cleaning, checked my snake, snake was free of anything for 3 months afterward then stopped checking
