But I would say it's entirely possible he was just hanging out there for the winter and took advantage of the warmth to get out and look for food and/or water and that's when you found him.

Remember, brown snakes don't like heat so if you're keeping him, room temp is more than adequate. They are the first snake out in the spring, last one to go inactive in the fall/winter. Often seen active outside, out and about, when its only the 50's.
Thanks for the info. I have him in the critter cage I was using to put the other two snakes in when I clean out their terrarium. I won't worry about getting a heat lamp since room temp is adequate.
