Not at all. It’s bioactive. Every now and then I have to pick out a huge poop but most of the time the clean up crew takes care of it. It doesn’t smell bad when they poop, which is a huge relief. I had the big red one in a paper towel-lined hospital tank for a few months and it smelled awful every time she pooped.

They rarely poop on the decorations, and if they do I just hose it down with a water sprayer.
