    Question about Dekay Brown Snakes

Hi there! Ive recently got a baby Dekay Brown Snake and Ive been looking all over for one question that I just can't seem to find the answer for and I thought I'd try my luck here. My question is about cage setup; Is a heating pad, basking light needed? I hear Dekay's are very timid and like to hide/burrow under rocks most of the time, so it made me unsure if heating was required or not. If heating is needed: What's the right temperature for them? And how many hours a day is the heating required?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Re: Question about Dekay Brown Snakes

Dekayi snakes are cool temp snakes that prefer to come out during the early morning while there is still dew on the grass, and also come out after sunset for the same reason.

My personal experience with this species of snake was to not use any heat, normal room temperatures will do very nicely.

For display purposes, I always used florescent lights, they don't give off much heat.

diet - small earthworms & garden slugs. (They are especially fond of the gooey looking ones)

substrate - Coconut fiber (Eco Earth) works well, but it sticks to food. Repti bark is best because it simply cannot fit into a Dekayi snake's mouth. I also used Cage Carpet with favorable results.

Wayne is the dekayi man and his advise is to be followed.
I think he has more experience with them then the rest of us together.

If I remember correctly Wayne didn't you get yours to eat pinky parts?

I got her to take whole pinkies.

I scented them with slug goo, and they had to be the smallest of the XS pinkies in the bag, but she ate them.
