    keeping snakes together and breeding?...

since i have a custom homemade 2cage shelf for my garters is it possible to house the male in one and keep 2 females in another one and then when time comes to hibernate them i will take the extra female out and put her in a 5 gallon covered with a towel(to keep darker) for hibernation and her couple weeks post hibernation feeding b4 i throw them all together for breeding ?
so pretty much just house them together after theyv already bred and in the summer pretty much

One rule of thumb is to give your snakes an enclosure where the length plus the width is at least as big as your biggest snake's length. You should add at least one foot to the enclosure's length for each additional snake in the enclosure. This is just one technique, though.

Personally, I think the snake in the bucket would find a way to escape. You might consider drilling air holes in a plastic shoe box or sweater box to use as a hibernaculum since it doesn't have to be nearly as large as the main pen.

well actualy the females enclosure is bigger than the males cuz 1. females tend to get bigger than male garters.2.it was an old bookshelf and the divider is uneven 60/40ish .
and i was going to put the snake in a 5 gallon glass tank. not a bucket. i wouldnt even keep a baby in there. there slicker than u think

they should be alright , right?

    Hey Ryan,
Sorry about the bucket idea. My bad. Anyway, as long as the measurements work out, and it's escape proof, ventilated and heated, it should be just fine. It might be even better for a hibernaculum as long as it's escape proof. Cheers,
    Rick
