I know this isn't a site for burm's but he's a snake and needs help so im looking at it that way.. ok got in a 5 foot albino burm from a guy that didnt know what the heck he was doing with a burm.. but he's got a MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR infestation of mites.. i got rid of over half of them with water but there some stuck way down in his scales.. it's been like 4 or more years since I've had a snake to have mites.. other then water what kills them fast is there like something i can buy but not that high in price to get rid of these??

ok what you do with a snake that big if you have no mite killer on site is hold a part of the snake under water..... completely submerged for a min or so then you get some tweezers and pick them out of that part...... then you go to the next part

Snake lover 3-25
08-13-2008, 09:01 PM
o also what may help get them out take a credit card and run it down his side firmly with the scales...... it should push them out

o right good luck!!!

Zoo med "Mite Off" spray is inexpensive, and they have it at petco.

It works great, all natural and I use it when I treat WC.

Wow, a Burm!!! Nice...

My BP darn near crushed my hand tonight, and he's only about 4.5 feet long, but very thick.

Rescued him from a party house:(

Good luck:cool:

PICS!!!!

if you want to go for inexpensive, try vegetable oil
it's the old-fashioned way
it does make the enclosure a bit smeary, but it works okay
I've done it with more fragile snakes that I didn't want to expose to harsh toxins, but it's been awhile and I don't remember how often you have to do it
perhaps someone else knows
good luck with that

A natural mite/lice treatement is also to dust an animal with diatomaceous earth-- HOWEVER, I have no idea about using it on snakes so I'd check with the vet first to make sure the dust couldn't irritate their respitory system. And this is not the swimming pool product, it has to be the agricultural product. It's also a natural dewormer and can be fed to larger animals but again, check on using it for snakes... it would be great to be able to dust his enclosure with it tho.

I alway took my pythons and boas to the vet for a shot if when I got them they had mites real bad, its the easiest and fastest way to get rid of them, however the sprays and stuff work it just takes a little longer....;)

If the infestination is that serious you shoild change clothes atfer working on it!
A drop of soap in the water, will make bathing more effective, and it might help to egalize the irritaion of its skin when you give an extra bath with
Betadin, Betaisodona or any other jodid-desinfection.
Thats what I do except mite-killers.

The vegetable oil works. I actually used olive oil, but veg oil is cheaper and probably works the same. You need to do it every other to every third day to get the hatching mites and super clean his cage at the same time. The mite spray has got to be easier, especially with a large snake. Good luck!

thanks everyone on the info I'm going to try the veggie oil and zoo med stuff before going to harsher products.. the vet is coming today to the house to check him out (hes on a 2 week vacation but made an exception) to make sure he don't have parasites inside as well.. :(

ok the vet is here and he telling me as i type on the laptop lol man he bought everything he almost like a vet on the go has a big van that looks like its identical to a room in a vet hospital lol.. there's also a vet tech with him.. ok anyways they took a fecal sample did the tests right here in the van and he said he sees no parasites in it THANK GOD!!!! he said the best way to cure the mites is he's going to give him a shot and also let him take a bath let him soake for 2-3 days if the snake wants to.. then if there are still mites left over get mite strips and put in his cage a few days and if he still has them hell come back and give him a 2nd shot and that should take care of them.. He also is giving me some kind of cream to put on him they just hate and it helps to stop if a infection would start from them biteing him... he said i can use that as much as i need too.. but other then the mites hes pretty healthy a little under weight because its probly stress from the mites.. he said if i haven't gotten a hold of him when i did his health would have gone down hill fast but i got him at the right time.. Which makes me feel 100% better now.. :D:D:D:D

Oh yeah i asked him how much this was going to cost me and he said nothing just call me when your 100% het albino male and female have babies and we can settle it then.. What a great guy.. He's reptile vet.. the only one here in my area unless I wanted to take him like 5-6 hours away..

very cool, Natalie
for some reason that video gave me a strong inkling of what it would be like not to have a gag reflex and to have esophageal muscles that work the food down, and how that could feel very satisfying
there was a very empathic quality about it - weird
maybe just where I'm at this morning

my daughter is learning that the rats she sees in the freezer are actually used for food.. lol and she wont eat chicken pig or cow now.. :D

I don't suppose, she's willing to try rat either

I grew up with the idea of honouring the animal that gave it's flesh
that's hard to do though when the animal is part of an anonymous mass and all one gets to see is the piece of flesh
perhaps having an awareness of the whole animal is a step in that direction
not everyone is cut out to be a vegetarian and perhaps if you teach your daughter to give thanks to the animal, it'll take the edge off that cold hard reality of death and killing

I suppose, she's also too young to read "Stranger in a Strange Land", so she may not be ready to "grok"

wow
where am I at this morning?

anyway - glad the burm is coming around so nicely - good job

i didn't want to do harsh treatments.. but i'm now like litterly PISSED at these stupid bugs.... what the heck would anything like this even excist? i mean that there purpose? ..

my husband said when i gave him the rats and it going thu his body it pushed everything like the eggs we couldnt see out on to the surface and now we have this..

I'm feeling so bad right now i'm litterly crying because ths poor animal is in my care and there sems like there no end to this.. i got this lice bedding spry lastnight that we used on our burm we had like 4 years ago they say just to spray the encloser down then let it set like 30 mins give the snake a bath then pat dry him down and put paper towles in ther in forms of caves so he can slide thu them it instaly melts the mites and eggs on contact because they very simler to lice..

I remember useing this and they was gone in like a day tops.. but that was 4 years ago.. But please please if anything else works let me know..

Btw, those things are hideous! The little things I treated on Sly were nothing like that. Those seem so much bigger and nastier. Of course I was dealing with a 12 inch mostly black snake so maybe it's all perception?

Mites will sometimes require repeat treatments to eliminate really bad infestations.

The eggs are nearly microscopic and up under scale plates, all the treatments recommend re-applying after 3 days to get the "second wave" before they can produce any more eggs.

Best wishes..

I just went through a big time war with snake mites... and I am rpetty sure that I have nipped them good. But it was VERY frustrating to think I had gotten them off a snake, only to see more of them there the next day. Mites have this uncanny ability to hide up under the snakes scales where no amount of olive oil will penetrate. The only snake that now has a few mites left is my female carpet python. When I got home I checked the cage and sure enough I had missed some the first cleansing. Luckily, the tip of her nose was peeled- it was time to shed!

Shedding is the absolute BEST time to rid your snake of mites. I intantly took her out of her cage and put her in the bathtub. I let it fill with some water and left her in there while I cleaned out her cage, spaying it down with equate lice spray and treating her new substrate and decor with some also. Her waterbowl will be left out overnight tonight so that none of it gets into drinking water. I then wen back upstairs with my giant toothbrush (large brush they make for cleaning dishes and what not) and proceeded to shed my snake. They great thing about this is that when they shed... all of the mites including the ones under their scales will come up because they are on top of the skin coming off. As long as you do it in the water, you can make sure that 1) you get it off all in one peice or as close to that as possible and 2) any mites that might try and hurry up and climb onto the snakes new skin can't do so because the snake is in water and water + mites= death. As I peeled the shed, I pulled the parts of her that had already shed up over the edge of the tub so that her new skin wasn't touching the mite-water. Then she got a quick rub with the towel and back into her cage she goes. If I see a mite in that cage after that, I will be very surprised!

So do not fret, you are doing a wonderful job so far.... and even if you can't 100% eradicate them right away, keep their numbers down as lowww as possible, in small numbers mites are nothing more than really, really, reaaally annoying... and the next shed will be your true chance to nip them permanently :)

***ANOTHER UPDATE***

I thought he was fine came home after going to a car show this is what I find.. I don't want to say it but......:(:(:(:(..... I don't understand it the vet gave him a clean bill of health.. The vet did blood tests and everything that's why he said he was fine..

I haven't been around my other snakes or handled them since I got him just in case and also I have him on the other side of the house since I got him.. Because I quarantine all the new reptiles that come in for up to 6-8 months before putting them in my reptile room.. Here's the video..

YouTube - Burm Posable IBD (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=mtc28LhoDN0)

After i posted this the first time.. I've now read that mites can cause this.. NOW this scares me to no end..

aSnakeLovinBabe
08-17-2008, 10:14 PM
Oh... that doesn't look good... I'm really sorry to see that. Was he doing that before?

It also looks like he may actually be doing that to rub the mites off of his head. I would not say just yet that the snake definately is ill with IBD... because it really looks to me like he is doing that in a desperate attempt to rub mites off of his own head.

whatever the case.... best wishes!!!!

but now that i think of it i remember my corns rubing their heads like that when they had mites..... but i left a few of their wood hides in with them so they usually rubbed against those...... the hides were thrown away once the mites were gone.....

If you have the $$$ buying online a can of PAM(Provent-a-mite) works wonders, & it never will come back!!

Provent-a-Mite Spray & quickTEMP Thermometer (http://www.pro-products.com/miteandtemp.html)

on my ball python group, they swear by it, it really works!! Just be sure to follow the directions on the can!!!

I'm really a newbie, but I thought i read somewhere that you probably shouldn't feed them when their health is off in any way? Especially since he ate well for you recently? I really don't know, just might be something to research further before feeding him.

Still have all my fingers crossed here!

I heared about that too

How is he doing???

There is no definite test for IBD... multiple organs and internal structures need to be examined to be sure about it.

I can see that he's feeling much better with you!!! you are a blessing to his existence!!!

He must have been blind for some time because of how his eye caps where covered .. i think he may have retained his eye caps thu 2 whole sheds.. I noticed how his eyes were very dull when he came in.. and there wasn't much movement to his eyes.. i also noticed that he had to get like 2 inches from his pray before he would attack it.. :(:( and now he can see again its scaring him of any fast movements...

Ok so me and my husband and kids went out to eat on Friday after noon to nightish.. We come home there's a box on our font door step.. From UPS... I ask Aaron did he order something? He's like no why??? So I hurry up get the kids in the house.. Get the box sit down and open the box and and in side is this little bag with a draw string and open it up and to my suprize there's a little normal Burmese.. I'm looking it over and then I look in the box again for a note and there's no note.. Aaron then hands me a card.. In side the card is says you did such a good job with the albino thought I'd get you a female normal so you can try to breed them in the future if you like to.. Aaron bought me a baby to raise up on my own to breed with the male!!! I didn't want to but I guess I have to now lol I LOVE MY HUSBAND!!!!

OH yeah we have cage space.. We have the cage that's just right for the little Burmese the big Burmese came in.. with heat mat and light.. Aaron's like me if there not a cage being used he finds something to fill it lmao..

By the way I named her Sarafina..
