I found a tiny hatchling garter in my yard today, he has a crush type injury. his tail is necrotic and a small piece fell off. I now have him in a little critter keeper on paper towels. I don't know if the injury is too far up to save him. im hoping you guys can give me some advice on what to do for him. I have him at 75degrees now, its 45 outside.

I think only time will tell whether the injury is life threatening or not. Is the snake eating? With an injury I would like to see a warm temp in the mid to upper 80's. 75° is fine for a cool spot. I think a critter keeper might be a little small if you are going to offer a temperature gradient. Offering a large water dish will also be a good thing.
Where are you located and do you know what caused the injury?

Have you cleaned the injury off at all? Like Steve said, it's hard to tell if that injury is life-threatening, but if there's necrosis and infection you'll want to take care of that. You can rinse it daily with diluted Hibiclens or Betadine (I prefer Hibiclens) in water, and you can leave painkiller-free Neosporin on it in between. Make sure it's the kind with no painkillers though.
