the macro is proving hours of fun ... I need to calm down as my PC is filling up steadily

I know the feeling.
I remember saying "I'll never fill and 350 gig drive".
Now, I'm looking to purchase a Terabyte or 2. When will the madness end!

There would be plenty of space on my hard drives, if I deleted all the stuff I shouldn't have.

The one thing that bothers me, is the lack of a media that would be practical to use as a backup for a terabyte or so of data.

I don't think practical is in the picture yet. Maybe someday a big flash drive
