Be careful of identification keys that rely strictly on pattern and/or color. They are often correct but oddball specimens do exist.

As far as your garter, the image you have wants me to log into some "Windows Live Storage" thing. So I can't see it. Not that I would be able to identify it anyway, I'm not too knowledgeable on Texas herps.
