There is no "the" ad. Those "northern" ads have been going for years and I've seen the label applied to red sided with little or no red, radixes, and obvious easterns.

    bingo!

I'm pretty sure that "northern" is applied because they're coming from Canada. (WC) Obviously Canada has easterns, red sided, and radix.

I'm going to stick to my guns here and say it's T. s. parietalis. (red sided)

That pic in the ad looks like Cee Cee...my eastern. I'm telling you...these people are coming over here and stealing all of the easterns from my backyard and selling them as northern garters! I just woke up...I better go check and make sure my easterns are still in their enclosures...

The word "northern" does not belong with any Thamnophis species. It doesn't exist.

Mark it is either Eastern or North Western... The shops over here haven't got a clue! They just label everything 'Northern' unless they have a positive ID, Which isn't very often.

Maybe it's a Yankee garter snake, as opposed to a Confederate one. Usually you can tell by the tiny blue hats, versus the tiny gray ones.
People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually, from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, it's more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey stuff.

if the snake owner lives in the UK and got the snake there, its an eastern...I don't know if they have northwesterns over there yet.

The picture looks identical to our Nobby.
Nobby does have a fee tiny flecks of red between the scales, only to really visible when she's curled in a tight loop with scale spread on the outside edge of the coil.

Nobby is turning out to be a great little snakes, a good eater, active, and likes to be handled. Despvthe doubt about what she is. My guess would be that if the snake in the pic was bought in the UK as a "Northern Garter" the chances are it's come from wherever Nobby did.

There's aren't any Northwestern Garters over here yet. Certainly our Nobby (sold as a Northern) is too large already to be a Northwestern.
