Thats a picture of a melanistic red side.

Anything is possible but if you look closely at the tail the coloration or lack thereof it does appear more anerythrystic. Especially laterally.

Ive had many of them. Im very familiar with every garter snake that you can get your hands on, i think ive had them all. They are a black snake with black eyes and a black belly. I believe the correct term for a black snake is melanistic.
Whats the difference between a parietalis and sirtalis...the red right? You take away the red from a parietalis and you have a snake that looks like an eastern garter....am i wrong or right?
