Rack System...

Does anyone have some experiences with keeping baby garters in a rack system? i know a lot of big lampropeltis (and stuff) breeders use a rack system... i was wondering if this is also working for garters

Personally I never use a rack system, but I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work just as well for Garters as it does for any other genus.

some of the rack systems I have seen have tiny gaps between the racks and the tubs.....got to make sure there are none as baby garters are tiny and escape artists!!!!

My concern with rack systems in general is lighting.... how do you provide an adequate light intensity for highly diurnal species?

You could probably use some TL Lighting behind the rack system, or make sure the room itself is light enough. Clear plastic boxes will help.
But then again (same points as on the dutch forum)
Will it work? if you're keeping, lets say 5, garters per 'rack unit', then how will it go when feeding?
Will they are panic when you open the slide?
Ofcourse, you can house them seperatly, but when you have 10 females giving birth to 20 young each. You'll need 200 'rack units'...boxes. 200 waterdishes, 200 feedingdishes, 200 rolls of kitchenpaper, etcetc.
I guess a rack system is defenitly "room efficient", but not very "time efficient". Or you'll have to 'work shifts' Today I'm feeding, cleaning, checking row 1 and 2, tomorrow row 3 and 4 etc.

depends, some racks are pretty light if they have white material and the really clear tubs, but in some racks ive thought about ordering they used light rope or something like that

also for hatchling racks (if your making it yourself) u keep the lids on the tubs

Wouldnt you need just as many water dishes if you housed that many breeding females and babies in regular cages? Or would you house the babies together then?
As for time, I like aquariums and terrariums,and do use many of them, but I can clean and feed the snakes that are in tubs way faster.
I would think the number of females you breed should depend on if you have the time to care for the babies, no matter what you keep them in. They all will need food and clean cages.
